Be brave and take those photos - even if you don't share them it would be great for you to have them as a memento of what you were/where you have come from .. so to speak.
Also goodluck with all those essays.... you won't have time to think about your surgery, you will be too busy writing all those essays!!!
Lastly goodluck with the surgery. I'm positive that everything will turn out well and you will enjoy the results.
